We Love (Lava) Lamp!

More and more the OnSwitch team is listening and following up on the many suggestions we get from our users. We try to act on suggestions when they seem like they’d be cool for everybody and they also seem feasible–i.e., it can be done with excellence for reasonable time and effort. (The most recent case of this: the 2 Stripes albums.)

Lava Lamp started with just such an email from an OnSwitch user “Dan” who wrote:

Howdy.  I am really enjoying the app so far.  There is one thing I really want but it just isn’t a thing yet for HUE. I want to be able to have a candlelight mode or embers style mode, but be able to set whatever color I want it to be. I.e. green candlelight or purple candlelight.   Hope that idea is something that could be a feature in the future.

    Thanks,

    Dan

In our email exchange with Dan he also pointed out issues with the way that Embers animated, specifically the bright spikes. So we corrected that and while we were at it we re-tuned 4 other Fire effects, this is covered in another blog post about the Fire Album Tune-Up. After we got done with those Fire album improvements we used the updated Embers as the starting point for 2 experimental scenes called “Smoldering Colors.” People loved the scenes and they were very highly used.

Lava Lamp evolved out of 2 experimental scenes called “Smoldering Colors”.

As we moved through our design process to turn these scenes into a product we reworked the concept to better capture the movement, color and feeling of the animated light: Lava Lamp!
